Background

The editor is a practising mechanical design engineer in the UK. Day-to-day work is mechanical design, with routine use of ISO, ASME and SAE standards for tolerancing, fits, fasteners and fluid power. The calculators on this site are the checks that come up again and again in that work, written down so each one can be traced to its source.

What the editor covers

Topics come from problems that design engineers meet in real projects and that free tools handle poorly. Examples are statistical tolerance stacks with GD&T, cylinder sizing with rod buckling, interference fits from ISO fit codes, and bolt preload with separate thread and head friction. Where a default goes beyond the standard, such as a friction value or a safety factor, the page says so and gives the reason.

Why no personal name

The editor publishes under the CheckedCalc byline for now. Trust here should not rest on a name. Each page gives the method, the cited standard with its edition, the assumptions and a worked example, so any engineer can check the result independently.

How the calculators are checked
